Hayes and his friends don costumes, pick up foam weapons, and run into the woods as fantasy heroes--all as a part of a massive game of pretend played by everyone in the neighborhood. It’s his first day with his older brother Sam’s adventuring party, and while Sam and fellow teens Lief and Lucy are off fighting monsters and casting spells, Hayes is paralyzed by the chainmail of masculinity weighing him down. After a battle goes wrong, Hayes must prove himself to Sam, Lucy, and Lief, but only after finding out that the secret to his strength lies not in the man he’s trying to be, but in those unknown parts of himself he’s afraid to discover.
