Nurturing Trancestry: A Weekend Celebration of Visibility in the Making

In honor of Trans Day of Visibility Otherness Archive programs two trans masculine centered films: 

by Annette Kenerly and Morisha Moodley’s film, 

 which will show twice on Sunday March 31st 3:30-6pm for 

Boys in the Backyard, Annette Kennerly United Kingdom 1997

Two San Francisco FTM transexuals sit in their backyard and discuss their daddy/boy relationship, transgender life, love, tattoos and tomato plants.

commes tous les garçon, asks what it means to be like all the boys. An assemblage of animation, found footage and personal archives pieces together queer identities from myriad perspectives.

These films are all spoken in English and unfortunately

 does not have subtitles due to limited resources, we appreciate your understanding with this.

We strive to provide a physical environment that is accessible to all visitors. This includes:

Offering ground-level, step-free access to our spaces.

Offering elevator access to our project space located on the first floor.

Providing accessible restrooms for all genders on every floor of our venues.

Providing folding chairs or other forms of seating at every venue.

Welcoming assistive animal at our spaces and events.

. For the inaugural program, ENTRE has invited April Lin 林森 from Otherness Archive to curate a selection of short works from their collection.

This program is for audiences 18 years of age and older.

FEATURING THE WORK OF: Lori Lo Blanco, Campbell X, Varsha Panikar, Malic Amalya, Elio J Carranza, WET MESS, Henry Hanson & Emre Busse

T﻿his screening will be held both in-person at ENTRE Film Center (415 W. Jackson Ave. Harlingen, TX) and online.

ENTRE X Otherness Archive 

Join us for an informal talk and screening with Los Angeles artist, 

, to discuss his short "Reverence of Self, 2021"  as it relates to queer masculinity within his community, and abroad. We will talk about what intersections we are facing as a collective, and where there are shifts that still need to be made structurally within society to better align with a community that has been in existence since the beginning. He will also discuss his curation process with "Outsiders in Berlin" which unpacks the connection between 

and the present-day objectification of transmasculine individuals living in Berlin.

 The common term coined in the 19th century for Human zoos, also known as ethnological expositions, were public displays of people, usually in a so-called "natural" or "primitive" state.

Cat Jones is a multi-media artist and independent curator whose work is centered around identity, self-acceptance, and reflection. He uses his years of mental health work to gauge his practice and influence narratives that are necessary to highlight; work that centers on the interpersonal dialogue one has with the external world, in ways that are inviting, sharp, and warm.

Film: Reclaiming Performance; Reverence of Self, 2021

This film serves as a visual & auditory reclamation of trans-masculine existence through performance. In this, there is a reclaiming of narrative & archival stories as it relates to one's aspect of Black Trans Masculinity. It is a call to witness black queer artistry as a form of resistance against Western cultural binaries.

Queer Masculinity in Films and Curations with Cat Jones

As part of this year’s festival, TATE has invited Otherness Archive to curate a film programme.

As Trans+ people we hold moments of joy, euphoria, and play in one hand, and grief, sorrow, and anger in the other. Soaking in joy and celebration of our communities is necessary to our survival, while recognising that our happiness is based on our safety and wellbeing is non-negotiable. In this film programme, we share how joy and laughter are necessary in our lives, because joy and rage can sometimes be one of the same — especially when combating anti trans laws and legislations to carve out a space for Trans+ lives to thrive.

TATE X Otherness Archive: Rage & Joy, Grief & Play

By invitation from DISHES Vienna, Otherness Archive presents a special moving image installation of film loops made from defaced trans-pornography by artist and filmmaker Autojektor.

Autojektor is a filmmaker and artist based in London. Her work involves found footage, home movies and other items of sentimental value. Through the destruction of these images and the breakdown of their physical structures - she uses the fragility of recording mediums to explore erasure and the value of image as confirmation of existence.

DISHES x Otherness Archive presents AUTOJEKTOR 

Our first IRL trip to the USA! March 10th - we are collaborating with Milkwaee based collective SEEN for their matinee series FILTH! 

In this informal workshop, Otherness Archive creator, Sweatmother, will lead an open discussion and screening - featuring films from Otherness Archive. The workshop will focus on the structure of film and how we, as trans people, can use cinematic tools in experimental ways, to create new hybrid forms of erotic storytelling through the t-masc gaze.

In this selection of moving image work, the artists make particular use of text, found footage, interviews and the camera to express desire - which we will explore collectively through the group discussion.

Otherness Archive: Biting The Image + Q&A

Twisting, caressing, studying, tearing, collecting – there are infinite things you can do with images, and as many ways to create them. These films by trans masculine filmmakers are firm in their refusal to be contained, intimately and urgently expanding the possibilities of the four corners of the video frame. Again and again, the image’s polished exterior is bitten through to portray trans masculine desires, dreams, and daily rhythms, whether it be via Grindr screenshots, passport scans, or Google Streetview.

Featuring films from the Otherness Archive, a visual archive documenting queer films and its pioneers, these works exemplify a breadth of filmic play, experimentation, and inventiveness. As Biting The Image evidences: the marriage between refusing to live by a cisheteronormative standard and moving image is a fertile and relevant one. The screening is activated by a live performance by Yuki Marin and Matisse Ciel, and followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Sweatmother, and Maz Murray.

Biting the Image, Program 

In collaboration with Black Cultural Archives, join us for an evening screening, of

. There will be two screenings of the film on the night with Josh Woolford's performance as the intermission. 

 by Sir Isaac Julien. The film explores homophobia, misogyny and violence within rap and dancehall across music scenes in the UK, US and Jamaica. Featuring interviews with artists themselves and cultural critics as well as music video analysis, the work is a vital intervention in dismantling patriarchy within Blackness.


The film was researched and sourced by Otherness Archive curator Deborah Findlater.

The program is part of Transforming Legacies, a current exhibition being held at Black Cultural Archives, as well as Black British Art curated by Pacheanne Anderson.

Transmasculine Desires: A Moving Image Exhibit 

Fringe! Queer Film Festival 2022, guest curation by Sweamother on behalf of Otherness Archive called Unpacked Desires.

The films selected—are all made by people in the same kinds of communities as the ones we live in—explore trans masculinities through love, sex, relationships and one’s body. Running through all of these films, in one form or another, is desire: desire to belong, to be loved, to hold, to fuck, to 

. Perhaps the one unifying thread between all these films is that none of them end with a clear resolution. Trans bodies are not linear, and neither are the paths we take to shape them. To be trans is to be constantly in motion: to relish processes, not ends: to surrender oneself to desire and throw fate to the wind.

The program includes a special reading by the group JAWFILLERS.

Curator May Ziadé presents a screening of short films centred around Otherness in Other Worlds on behalf of Otherness Archive.

Whether on the star and moon, or within dream-like realms of inner projections, all these films are centered around Otherness in Other Worlds. At the crossroad between fantasy and reality, the events and situations depicted on screen shine a light on the Other's relationship to the world we all tangibly inhabit - and projects us into one where we don't. The OtherWorlds are neither utopias or dystopias - but all function as a reminder that the line between hope and despair is fine.

London born and based artist Deborah Findlater presents a screening of Isaac Julien’s 1994 documentary 

 The film explores homophobia, misogyny and violence within rap and dancehall across music scenes in the UK, US and Jamaica. Featuring interviews with artists themselves and cultural critics as well as music video analysis, the work is a vital intervention in dismantling patriarchy within Blackness.


Following the film there will be an intergenerational conversation with Chloe Filani discussing how issues it raises persist today and what, if any, changes have occurred.

A month-long screening of a selection of work from both international and national filmmakers and artists who submitted to Otherness Archive's open call, as well as films found by our researchers. The wide range of work focuses on the nuances of the trans masc experience.

The project - the forgotten archives of the trans masc experience - refers to how the practice of archiving trans masculine lives has been forgotten. The intention of this archival project is to create potential ideas and thoughts on what a trans masc archive could look like. Additionally, to document the process of constructing an archive, rebuilding an archive, assembling an archive - and how it could reflect both the absence and the presence of a "forgotten archive". The intention is to not talk about the films as "forgotten work": rather, its focus is about the practice of archiving, how we see work and how we understand research.

Otherness Archive Preview 

Otherness Archive joins Glastonbury in Shangri-La* from June 22-26th 2022 to preview some of the submissions from the trans masc moving image call out. 

This selection of work is from both international and national filmmakers and artists who submitted to our open call. The preview of work focuses on movement, music, and vibrancy.

While in a physical space around the installation, Otherness Archive talks about archive building and will hold an open conversation on how to reimagine outdated archival structures and their access.

Otherness Archive Installation x Shangri La Glastonbury 

(1983) by Antonio Gliménez Rio. Filmed only three years after homosexual intercourse was legalized in Spain and as reports of Spain's first HIV cases were emerging, this cult film is an invaluable document of trans survival and its entanglements with sex work, burlesque, family, religion and state. Its lessons are pertinent now as the day it was made. 

This event will shine a light on the historical context of the invaluable documentary 

and highlight the importance of the work that goes into preserving and archiving trans histories.

The subtitling and translation of this film was commissioned by Otherness Archive and the first English translation of its kind, by Ailo Ribas and Sara Yaoska Herrera Dixon.
