The focus is on the experiences of gender outlaws, particularly transgender individuals, whose very existence challenges these systems. Rather than sensationalizing trans experiences, the program serves as a resource for transgender people to better understand their bodies, the financial realities of transitioning, and access to life-affirming medical surgeries. In this informal workshop, Otherness Archive creator Sweatmother and 

 - will lead an open discussion and screening featuring films from Otherness Archive and Max’s personal film work. The workshop will focus on the structure of film and how we, as trans people, can use the film's structure in experimental ways, in order to create new hybrid forms of erotic storytelling through the t-masc gaze.

We will focus on cinematic tools that can be used to communicatee one's desire. In this selection of moving image work, the artists make particular use of text, found footage, interviews and the camera to express desire and how the camera can be an extension of the phantom limb - which we will explore collectively through the group discussion.

Here, the water facilitates a looking across time, mirrors and windows, as well as gaps and blank spots. A sort of portal, upon which bodily evidence materialises. The voice is sense-making, it maps and unpicks, it looks to teenagers, to suburbia, to middle England, to queer futures, to healing.

 (1997-1999), in conversation with Sweatmother. Together they will explore the significance of Kennerley's work within this context and on the festival's pioneering role in shaping the landscape of transgender representation in the late 1990s.

*Otherness Archive uses the term ‘trans masculine’, we are referring to all the nuances of the trans masc experience in moving image work, and to the various expressions of masculinity found across the trans community including, but not limited to, trans men, non-binary people, dykes, butches, bull daggers, crowdaggers, studs, t-fags and gender non-conforming people. We really want to deconstruct heteropatriarchal barriers to access, such as age restrictions and mislabelling that further obscures trans works of art.

Otherness Archive hosts the UK Premier of Lost Bois by filmmaker and artist Devyn Galindo.

Join us for a conversation with Devyn on how Lost Bois premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and their DIY filmmaking. This informal conversation will be followed with a curated film program by Devyn featuring transmasculine centered films. The screening will conclude with the UK premiere of Lost Bois (2024) - a hedonistic and gritty exploration into the lives of three rebellious trans bois in New York City.

Lost Bois is a raw technicolor explosion of angst, laughter, and the unshakeable bond of trans brotherhood. Samp, Gian, and Moose all know that a boi’s first testosterone shot is also a right of passage into a world grappled with loneliness and a relentless search for belonging. Isolation hangs heavy, only pierced by the rush of poppers and the reality-bending trips of shrooms, the frantic energy of punk bands, and most importantly each other.


Devyn Galindo (they/them) is a two spirit, trans-masc, Mēxihkah transdisciplinary artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles | Tongva Tierra. Primary disciplines include filmmaking, photography, installation, and sculpture. Devyn’s body of work celebrates Queer, Trans, BIPOC subcultures and stories.

We are excited to have Rizky Rahad join us in London from Indonesia-based collective QAMERAD. During his time here he will conduct three workshops with Otherness Archive titled Queers Shoot Back! examining the liberatory potentials of various queer aesthetics of escape as an alternative strategy to representation.

Representation as a political/aesthetic strategy can benefit queer communities as it can potentially lead to social acceptance. But in a neoliberal society, where queer visibility is increasingly co-opted not only to make profits for big corporations but also to give States more control over their citizens, how do we collectively move beyond representation and find a more radical route to liberation? This is crucial for communities whose representations have only made them more surveilled, persecuted, and tortured by various institutions of power. Queer theorists like José Esteban Muñoz and Zach Blas propose alternative politics that convey the desire for queer communities to escape regimes of control, from State violence to neoliberal co-optation, and cultivate forms of living otherwise––a queer “utopia.”

Bringing queer escapist theories in conversation with his filmmaking and ethnographic experiences with various queer communities in Indonesia, QAMERAD co-founder Rizky Rahad will conduct three workshops with Otherness Archive examining the liberatory potentials of various queer aesthetics of escape as an alternative strategy to representation. Through discussion Rizky will share queer methodologies that critically restage the violent system of LGBTQ+ representation/archive into collective care.

These workshops will culminate in a final film programme at Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest showcasing contemporary moving images from Indonesia of various genres that offer a new aesthetic of escape––folklore and mythologies––as a strategy to speculate our collective (queer) future.

Workshop #1: The Queer Aesthetics of Escape

Through discussion of various texts and films, we will explore the liberatory potentials of opacity and excess—the queer aesthetics of escape, as a means to escape current regimes of control, from State violence to neoliberal co-optation, and cultivate new forms of living otherwise.

Workshop #2: Restaging Queer Archives as Collective Care

We will break down alternative praxis and methodologies that materialise collective care by restaging the violent system of LGBTQ+ representation/ archive and weaponizing the film projector. With a screening of Rizky’s short film 

and discussion of Bali-based film collective QAMERAD.

Workshop #3: Folklore as Speculative Queer Future(s).

An exploration of folklore and mythologies as aesthetics of escape that speculate collective queer future(s). We will dissect several contemporary moving images from Indonesia that reject Western identity/visibility politics and reimagine queer liberation/care through collectively turning back to pre-colonial representations of gender nonconformity.

, a collaborative film project merging two queer and trans-centred communities––Otherness Archive from London and QAMERAD from Bali––to create a long-term partnership utilising alternative modes of cinema making and sharing that sustains and elevates transnational queer solidarity. Supported by the British Council’s Connection Through Culture Grant, this 7-month long collaboration will be a cross-residency of the two founders––Sweatmother in Bali and Rizky Rahad in London––where they will both engage with their opposite communities through workshops and focus on topics such as collective memory, ethical curations and collaborative watching. The two final programmes in Bali and London will be a collective experience encouraging community engagement where the line between artists, organisers, and audience is blurred.

Special Screening: I Saw the TV Glow by Jane Schoenbrun

A screening of films from Otherness Archive, curated by STIGMATA’s founder M Lissoni, centering practices of trans embodiment and auto ethnography.

The programme explores themes of gender disruption through religion, spirituality, and ritual performance, offering a transnational perspective. It also delves into the ideas of freedom and survival found within community and myth. The films chosen reflect the themes of the upcoming research journal "The Scar as Archive," edited and published by STIGMATA, which will launch in October 2024.

Wellcome Collection x Otherness Archive 

 June 8th, in Spain. Our curated film program at this year's festival focuses on Butchness or marimacho, as a type of "trans masculine" identity and experience within our moving image archive. 

This programs will be curated by latinx artist Sweatmother. 

Multidisciplinary and collaborative meeting on butch identities. A communal and open space for conversation and reflection on identities, intersections, archives, the meaning of the word and the elasticity of language in the current context. A meeting that aims to celebrate, share and make visible the various forms in which the butch identity crosses us.

With the participation of: Lola Clavo and Mariana Echeverri will be in charge of presenting the Conference and will tell us about Oda Butch, a publication that collects several voices that address in a poetic, personal and experimental way the question of female masculinity (or male femininity) and one's own plasticity gender and language. Given the lack of documentation on this identity in the Spanish-speaking context, Oda Butch collects and opens space to name, make visible and imagine ways to exist and live gender expression, taking into account both its fluidity and the rootedness that can to be in the culture Orne Cabrita will talk to us about the butch trans-Caribbean experience. Ari Rovira will talk to us about Lancaster Studio, a butch tailoring project born to dress different queer bodies and identities. The project focuses on dressing through the dress and other tailored pieces, the needs and shapes of queer bodies. As a butch tailor, he reflects on how clothes become a tool that transforms us, builds us and contributes elements of our identity.

Utilising “archive” as a form of practice and feeling, 

 will lead three practical and personal workshops on topics such as the forgotten practice of archiving in relation to trans and queer people and how the “archive” can be reworked into cinema curation, collective care and elevating trans feminism. Additionally Sweat will speak on founding 

, an accessible online archive providing an open-access library and freely available resource, featuring their first iteration focusing on *transmasculine moving-image, both contemporary and pre-existing work.

 will collectively collaborate with Sweatmother on a final curated film program of works from 

 to present to their local Bali communitie(s). This will be an opportunity to share curatorial responsibilities and defy the notion that there is only one curator. This will be an open space for friends and other members of the queer Bali community to enjoy conversation and share ideas, feelings, and reflections from the film program presented.

Through discussion, Sweatmother will touch on historical events that shifted the use of archives into forms of art and transgression for queer and trans+ communities, and how lived experiences can make alternative archives today.

Workshop #2: Trans Feminism in the Digital Age

We will break down on how to run an intentional, inclusive, and sustainable queer collective/space. With a discussion on how trans feminism can be put into practice in a world heavily surveillanced, censored and exclusionary to transness (on the rise of gender criticism).

Workshop #3: Collective Curations with Otherness Archive:

An introduction into Otherness Archive, the artists involved and how it’s a resource for global trans+ and queer communities. We will discuss topics such as otherness, collaborations, and how to practise ethical curations.

We will provide extra computers/smartphones to those without access to devices.
