In this utterly endearing animation by Iris Moore, a couple gets to know themselves and each other by exchanging their eyes, genitalia and facial features with different ones. The exchange of body parts (with the biology and playfulness of Potatohead toys) for the sole sake of new corporeal experiences, has us question our own preconceptions about the body’s rigid immutability.

This film was made by a lover of mine at the time, Eli. It “stars” Eli, myself, and a friend of ours, Seeley. Eli and I met in the fall of 2001, soon after I had moved to San Francisco, at Queeruption 3: a 5-day anticapitalist gathering that included workshops, panels, performances, parties, screenings, and actions. And lots of sex. born queer, dear doctors reflects the Bay Area that I came up in as a young queer, which has lost much of its vitality and population due to gentrification caused by the tech boom. This five-minute film, preserved on VHS, was shot in 2002 or 2003, in Oakland, when I was twenty-two years old. I’ve been wanting to digitize it for a while, but hesitated to do so at the Graduate Center library due to the graphic nature of the content. Recently, I just threw a jacket over the screen and prayed for the best. And so, here we have it.

Born Queer: Dear Doctors

The video features couples and individuals listening the song First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes on headphones presumably for the first time. In 2006 it received a special recognition from GLAAD for its inclusivity. Notable to mention - it features a group of lesbians, gender non-confirming people and trans sweetheart Daniel Sea with their then partner Bitch aka Capital B.

The song itself came out in 2005, however, the official video available on YouTube right now is from 2006.

The film follows Tobi's exploration of their gender and acceptance of themselves. 

Tobi is a typical 16-year-old, desperate for the end of school and wondering what path in life to take. The hard-working people in Tobi’s tiny village struggle to make ends meet, while the kids can’t wait to escape to Budapest as soon as they turn 18. Against the challenges of an increasingly conservative Hungary, where trans rights are currently being stripped back, this insightful documentary generously shines a light on the journey of Tobi’s mother as much as Tobi themselves. Having come out once as male in his mid-teens, Tobi later shifts towards a non-binary identity. It’s a steep learning curve for the family to re-evaluate the deeply ingrained gender binary in this rural corner of Central Europe, but for this caring and communicative group, love wins the day.

Colors of Tobi

is an experimental film exploring the desire for transmasc, transmen, butch, stud, Agressives, masculine of center (MOC) people assigned female at birth. Stunning black and white images drift across the screen while transmen, femme women and butch and MOC people speak about the complexity of their desire. The soundtrack is by Campbell L Sangster. Animation is by Neelu Bhuman.

DES!RE

Dust, a split-personality cyborg of fluid gender, zooms through time and space in search of their own memories and a sense of understanding. They travel from the Planet of White Dust where war is constant, to the Planet of Blood and Swelling, a hybrid of their father's body.

In 1960s Tokyo, Gonda owns a bar in which the gay, cross-dresser, and trans scenes meet. Gonda is in a relationship with the madam of the bar, Leda. As the younger Eddie starts a passionate affair with Gonda, she ignites the jealousy of Leda, unaware of another kind of history between them.

Funeral Parade of Roses

In this two-chapter project I piece together the progression of my HRT process, using voice documentation and virtual scenarios to recognize physical and psychological changes. Both chapters are chronological evidence of a -one year- gender affirming experience dating back to pre-testosterone days, when I first envisioned my nonbinary avatar inspired by my deepest dreams.

Anneke is 12. She loves ice hockey and has a loving, close-knit family. She’s also a hardcore tomboy. Everybody who meets her assumes she’s a boy. That makes puberty even harder for her than most girls.


Anneke’s not sure if she wants to be a girl, a boy, or something in-between when she grows up. To give her more time to decide, her doctor has put her on a medication that will suppress the hormones that are causing her body to change before she’s ready. Even though she’s been rejected by her friends and struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, Anneke is determined to be her true self. To do that she’s decided to maintain a fluid gender identity—she wants to make sure her insides matches her outsides.

A portrait film of a purposefully unsettling kind, starring Dominique Dibbell of The Five Lesbian Brothers. The exact identity of the redhead at the center of Lady is impossible to pin down. Is she a woman playing a man playing a woman, or more specifically, a lesbian playing a gay man playing a heterosexual woman? This purposeful ambiguity invites the audience to question the blurred parameters of sexuality, desire, and female identity.
